DIY Trinket Dish

DIY Trinket DishEver since Drew and I got married (which was over a year ago) I have been meaning to find a cute dish to hold my rings when I take them off.  I found some trinket dishes at Anthropologie but wasn't really feeling the $32 price tag, so I decided to go the DIY route.  These little dishes are crazy easy to make in about an hour and cost maybe $5 each.

Materials

Oven-bake clay, which can be found at your local craft store (I used (1) 2oz package per dish)
rolling pin
wax paper
ruler
xacto knife
small bowl to use as a template
shot glass
baking sheet
gold acrylic paint
paint palette or paper plate
paint brush

DIY Trinket DishDirections

1.  Preheat your oven to the recommended temperature on the clay packaging.  Kneed the clay in your hands to warm it up and make it easier to work with then form it into a smooth ball.  Use the rolling pin to roll out the clay between 2 sheets of wax paper until it is about 1/8" thick.

2. Peel the wax paper off of your clay and cut it into the shape you want your dish to be.  On one dish I used a ruler and my xacto knife to cut a hexagon shape and on the other I traced around a small bowl to get a circle.  After you cut your shapes you can wet your fingers a little bit and smooth out any rough edges.

3.  Place the bottom of your shot glass in the center of the clay on the side you want to be the top, and flip both the clay and glass over.  Press down around the edge of the clay to create a bowl shape.  I used the bottom of the shot glass because the edges were rounded and it left less of an indentation in the clay.

4. After you have shaped all of your clay pieces place them on a baking sheet and bake them for the amount of time suggested for your clay.  My directions said to bake my clay at 275° for 30 minutes but I found I needed to bake it about 10 minutes longer.  The clay will still be a bit soft once it comes out of the oven but will harden as it cools.

5.  After your clay has cooled you can leave it as is, or embellish it a little.  I chose to add some gold accents to both of my dishes.  Let the paint dry before you use it, and you're done!
